General Questions About Motorcycling in Norway
Why is Norway a great destination for motorcyclists?
Norway offers an unparalleled riding experience thanks to:
Ever-changing landscapes – From deep fjords and towering mountains to winding coastal roads
Midnight sun & northern lights – Unique natural phenomena depending on the season
Freedom to roam – Wild camping rights allow on uncultivated grounds
Toll-free roads for motorcycles – Save money while exploring (except for some private roads and ferries)
Polite & disciplined drivers – Making riding safer and more enjoyable
Rich Viking and cultural history – Scenic routes pass by historic sites, stave churches, and UNESCO heritage locations
Every turn brings a new breathtaking view, making Norway one of the most scenic and rewarding destinations for motorcyclists.
When is the best time to ride a motorcycle in Norway?
May – September: Best weather, long daylight hours
June – August: Warmer temperatures, but also “peak tourist season”
We use quotation marks because “peak tourist season” differs greatly place by place—crowded attractions in Rome vs. merely some visitors in Norway.
September – October: Fewer tourists, beautiful autumn landscapes
Spring and autumn can be unpredictable, and some mountain roads may close due to snow. Always check real-time road conditions at Vegvesen.no.
What is the average summer temperature in Norway?
Norway’s summer (June–August) offers long daylight hours and comfortable riding temperatures. In 2023, Oslo’s average daily high was around 22°C (71°F)—cooler than Berlin or Paris but warmer than London. It’s the perfect escape from southern Europe’s heat.
What are some of the best motorcycle roads in Norway?
Norway has 18 Official Scenic Roads, designed specifically to showcase the country’s natural beauty. These roads are divided into regions:
Western Norway (Fjords & Coastline)
Atlantic Ocean Road – Stunning bridges over the sea
Geiranger-Trollstigen – Famous hairpin bends & fjord views
Aurlandsfjellet – “Snow Road” with dramatic landscapes
Hardanger – Ride through Norway’s orchard region
Ryfylke – High mountains, deep fjords, and waterfalls
Hardangervidda – Norway’s highest plateau
Central & Eastern Norway (Mountains & Valleys)

Lesser-Known Scenic Roads

Is Norway expensive travel destination?
It depends on your travel style. While luxury hotels and fine dining are expensive, Norway offers many affordable and authentic experiences. You can legally wild camp for free almost everywhere or stay at cozy campsites, you can enjoy free sea fishing, cook over a fire, or try local street food. The options to decrease the cost of your trip are endless. Plus, free drinking water is always easily available.
Can I wild camp during my trip?
Yes! Thanks to Allemannsretten (the Right to Roam), you can camp for free in nature, as long as you stay at least 150 meters from houses and respect the environment. There are also campgrounds, cabins, and motorcycle-friendly hotels available.
Which Oslo airport should I choose when booking my flight?
The main airport serving Oslo is Gardermoen Airport (OSL), located about 35 km (22 miles) north of the city. It is the best choice for most travelers, offering the most flights, easiest transportation options, and the shortest travel time to both Oslo and Nordic Riders motorcycle rental.

What motorcycles do you offer for rent and why?
We specialize in adventure-ready Royal Enfield motorcycles, perfect for Norway’s diverse terrain. Norway has limited highways and is all about scenic routes, winding roads, and lower speed limits. Because of this, massive 1100cc+ touring bikes aren’t, in our humble opinion, the best choice. Instead, we believe a mid-range, comfortable, and agile motorcycles are the ideal option for fully enjoying the landscapes without unnecessary bulk or cost.

Can I ride on your motorcycle from Norway to other Nordic countries?
Crossing international borders with the rented motorcycle is allowed only with a written permission from Nordic Riders AS which must be obtained in advance.
Written permission is required to cross international borders with a rented motorcycle because insurance coverage varies by country, customs may require proof of authorization, roadside assistance coverage varies by country, and different toll systems and regulations apply across other Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland).
