Safety on Norwegian Roads: What Every Guest Rider Needs to Know

At Nordic Riders, we’re all about adventure — but also about keeping it real. Norway’s roads are stunning, but they can also be demanding and even dangerous. That’s why we only rent out motorcycles from mid-April to mid-October, when conditions allow for safe riding in at least some parts of the country.

Touring Spring (mid-April through May) and Touring Fall (September to mid-October) are perfect for exploring the south coast and lower-altitude roads. But every year until mid-May and from mid-September, we even strongly recommend that guest riders avoid the northern part of Norway (north of Trondheim) as well as all areas above 800 meters in altitude. The conditions there can be unpredictable, with lingering snow, ice, or sudden weather changes.

Until mid-May and after mid-September, please stay away from areas above 800m (purple and dark brown) and from Northern Norway (north of the red line).

Even when Norway opens its majestic mountain passes, the fact that they are “open” doesn’t always mean they’re suitable for everyone — at some times the high altitude roads are only safe for cars, and some twisty roads are generally best saved for until you’ve built up more experience.

Choosing the Right Road

Not all scenic rides are suited to every rider. Here’s how we’d break them down:

Hard Roads (for seasoned riders)

  • Trollstigen (0 m → 850 m) – iconic, narrow, steep, packed with hairpins.
  • Lysevegen / Lysebotn Road (0 m → 932 m) – 27 switchbacks, dramatic drop to the fjord.
  • Sognefjellet (sea level → 1,434 m) – Norway’s highest mountain pass, exposed and weather-sensitive.

Intermediate Roads (for growing confidence)

  • Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (320 m → 1,139 m) – historic route with gentle curves and glacier views.
  • Gaularfjellet (0 m → 748 m) – moderate climbs, waterfalls, and lush valleys.
  • Hardanger (0 m → 1,250 m) – fjordside ride with orchards, waterfalls, and manageable terrain.

Easier Alternatives (great for beginners)

  • Rondane (600 m → 1,000 m) – gentle curves through wild, open landscapes.
  • Ryfylke (0 m → 929 m) – fjords, islands, and varied but forgiving roads.
  • Jæren (0 m → 150 m) – coastal ride with wide horizons and steady asphalt.

Three Key Safety Tips

1. Always Check Mountain Pass Status

Norwegian weather changes fast. A sunny morning in the valley can turn into fog, rain, or even snow up high. Many passes aim to open in mid-May, but some don’t clear until late May or early June, and temporary summer closures are not unusual. Before riding into the mountains, always check Statens Vegvesen for live updates.

In Spring and Fall: One-day riders take on Trollsteigen – the next day is closed due to snow.

2. Take It Slower Than You Think

Norway enforces lower speed limits for a reason:

  • Hairpins, steep gradients, and narrow lanes demand caution.
  • Tunnels can change conditions instantly: darkness, condensation, slippery patches.
  • Wildlife and livestock often wander onto the road — moose, sheep, even cows.
  • Asphalt can suddenly end, turning into gravel.

Even if the sign says 80 km/h, sometimes 50 km/h feels plenty fast. Ride for the conditions, not the number on the pole.

3. Master the Roundabouts

Two-lane roundabouts are common and can be tricky on a bike:

  • Never stop directly behind a car — keep slightly to the side so you have an escape route.
  • Stick to your lane, signal clearly, and avoid sudden moves.
  • If unsure, stay in the outer lane and exit calmly.

It’s not about rushing — it’s about keeping space, visibility, and options.
