Motorcycle Trip & Family Summer Vacation on the Southeast Coast of Norway

While most Norwegians head southwest toward Kristiansand for summer, we decided to try something different. We’re always looking for lesser-known spots — places with good roads, access to nature, and that calm summer rhythm that still works with a motorcycle. But this time, we had one extra goal: it had to work for the whole family.

The idea was simple — no compromises. We needed something close to Oslo, with great riding roads, but also soft beaches for our toddler, quiet paths for walking the dogs and riding e-bikes, and a peaceful setting where we could all relax. Oh, and ideally not packed with tourists.

So, we went looking for a place that had it ALL!

Oketangen — Camping Right by the Shore

Right near the Swedish border, Oketangen turned out to be just what we were looking for. We could ride the motorcycle straight down to the shore, and there were also good parking options for the rest of the family traveling by van. The area had an infinite number of camping spots right by the beach. It was quiet, with sand beaches and many nice forest paths.

Road 108 from Fredrikstad — Ride Over Islands and Bridges

From Fredrikstad, we took Road 108 that winds its way across bridges and islands, with wide views of the sea almost the entire way. We named it The Atlantic Road of the South. It’s the kind of road you could ride back and forth all day long — smooth curves, little traffic, and always something to look at. It leads you right into Ytre Hvaler National Park.

Ytre Hvaler National Park — Explore Norway’s First Marine National Park

This unique national park was a real surprise for us. With its mix of rugged nature, rocky islands, and rich coastal heritage, it’s perfect to explore on foot, by kayak, or even paddleboard. We had forgotten to bring ours, so we were very happy to find out you can borrow a kayak for free — and keep it the whole day! Camping is allowed here too, but you need to book a spot in advance. It’s a fair system that lets people enjoy this unforgettable place while making sure it stays protected and well looked after.

Kuvauen – Secluded Historic Boathouses and Quiet Bays

Kuvauen was a last-minute recommendation from our friends, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. It’s a small, peaceful spot with old boathouses and calm bays surrounded by smooth rocks. We walked a short path from the parking area, and suddenly it felt like we were far from everything. The beach was perfect for a swim, and there was plenty of space to explore or just sit and take in the view. It all felt a bit like a secret waiting to be found.

So, did we find what we were looking for?

Yes — absolutely.

The southeast coast of Norway, just above the border with Sweden, turned out to be a perfect summer spot. A place where one could enjoy the motorcycle without leaving the family behind. Great for a solo camping trip too — or a long weekend of riding, beach time, and slow mornings with coffee by the sea.

It’s not far from Oslo, but it feels like a real break — the kind of place where you can take it slow, relax, reflect, and reset.

We’ll be definitely heading back. Maybe even every summer.
